Kitchen Remodeling in Baltimore – 5 Tips During Renovation

5 Tips To Help Make Your Kitchen Remodeling in Baltimore Less Stressful

Everyone knows that a successful renovation doesn’t happen overnight. Despite months of preparation, the process of transforming your kitchen can present a variety of inconveniences for your family. Here are 5 tips that will help make your kitchen remodeling process less stressful.

Relocate

Relocating is a good option for families that spend the majority of their time at home. The construction process is disruptive, and many families find it difficult to relax when loud machinery is in use. If it’s an option, relocating could provide you with a peaceful and enjoyable refuge for the duration of the renovation project.

Establish Kitchen #2

If you choose to remain at home during the renovation, consider designating a room or nook as a second kitchen. Dining out for every meal isn’t realistic, so it’s important to create an area for brewing coffee or toasting bread. You may not be able to cook elaborate meals, but you can store essential kitchen items in this temporary space.

Without the dishwasher or kitchen sink, doing the dishes requires a bit of creativity. Consider purchasing recyclable plates, napkins, and utensils to use during the renovation process. Stock the pantry with nonperishable goods that you and your children can reach to for a quick meal, such as granola bars and crackers.

Fire Up the Grill

Good weather permitting, take to your outdoor space as much as you can during the kitchen renovation. Use your grill to create

avariety of delicious meals that the entire family can enjoy. Perhaps you haven’t taken advantage of your deck or patio in the past. Take the opportunity to plan a family day outdoors and have an adventure in your own backyard.

Maintain Good Communication

Maintaining an open line of communication with your contractor can help the process go smoothly. Check the site daily to alleviate the stress of the unknown, and request weekly progress reports.

Keep the Outcome in Mind

You have spent months preparing for your kitchen renovation, and now it’s finally happening. Keep in mind that the construction process is temporary and that soon you will have the kitchen you’ve always wanted. Consider the process part of the adventure!

Aging in Place – Optimizing Your Kitchen and Bathroom

What is “Aging in Place”?

You may have started hearing the term “aging in place” thrown around by designers and builders. But just what does this term mean? And how can you incorporate the idea into your own home design?

Preparing for the Future

Aging in place is very much how it sounds: it’s preparing a home with features that help the homeowners to age comfortably in their own home rather than relocating to a nursing home. The idea has been catching on quickly; the walk-in shower is the trendiest new bathroom feature among younger homeowners while also being a smart investment for those who plan to live in their homes for decades to come.

How Can I Age in Place?

There are lots of great ways to alter your home to successfully age in place. Alterations range from small details–like changing out cabinet knobs for arthritis-friendly pulls–to big remodels–like switching out a bathtub with a more accessible walk-in shower. The amount of alterations that you decide to make are ultimately up to you, your tastes, and your budget. Here are a few ideas for changes you can make in your home that will help to facilitate aging in place:

  • Install grab bars and a shower seat in the shower to help prevent falls.
  • Install an adjustable shower head in the shower, which makes showering easier and more comfortable.
  • Replace a bathtub with a notch-cut tub or a walk-in shower, both of which are easier to access.
  • Renovate your kitchen cabinets so that there is space underneath the sink for a wheelchair-bound individual to comfortably use the sink.
  • You can do the same with your kitchen island by installing a lower table at chair level with room for wheelchair-bound individuals (and chairs for family and friends!)
  • Switch out hard-to-grasp knobs with “D-shaped” pulls on your kitchen cabinets.
  • Update appliances with energy-saving models that utilize large displays.

3 Things to Consider Before Remodeling Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s where family gathers, where friends are entertained, and where memories are made. Your kitchen is also a space to exercise your creativity and experiment with new flavors. Having an outdated kitchen can hinder your kitchen’s potential. However, forgetting a few essential elements in your remodeled kitchen can spell disaster. Before remodeling your kitchen, make sure to consider these important features!

Lighting

For safety’s sake, it is essential that key food prep and cooking areas are well-lit. Bright lights are a wonderful aid in the food prep and cooking areas, while more subtle, moody lighting is better for eating areas. If the kitchen all has uniform lighting, then the food prep and cooking areas could be dangerously under-lit, or the eating area could be starkly over-lit and uncomfortable. Pendant lights are a great way to light eating areas, as they can be adjusted for brightness and also add aesthetic appeal to your kitchen. Uplighting is a great way to light food prep and cooking areas, since up-lighting provides bright lighting with little to no glare.

Space

If you have a small, cramped kitchen, you’re probably thinking about how you can remodel your kitchen to best utilize its limited space. A great way to make a small kitchen feel bigger is to move to an open kitchen plan. This involves removing any unnecessary walls to open up the space. An open kitchen plan can make your kitchen feel larger and airier. Vertical storage is also a great way to utilize the space in a small kitchen. Kitchen cabinets that reach the top of the ceiling provide extra, essential storage space. Having a well-planned kitchen space saves you from feeling crowded, overwhelmed, and frustrated.

Color

Psychologists have proven that the color of a room can affect a person’s mood. If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, you want to make sure that your kitchen’s color scheme isn’t one that will make you feel stressed. Many designers are predicting that interior design trends in 2016 will focus on relaxation and meditation. This is why they are calling for muted pastels in the kitchen. Muted pastels provide a soft, uplifting ambiance to a kitchen. Cabinets painted in muted pastels mesh well with the natural look of stone countertops and metallic kitchen fixtures. Whatever color you choose, just remember: you’re going to see a lot of it. Make sure to choose a color you will enjoy seeing every day.
